Demand most recently fell by 3.6%, having risen by 20.6% over the preceding five years. Breast surgery is a significant expense and generally costs between €4,000 and €8,000. Despite a slight decline in demand, breast surgery remains popular. As a result, some clinics advertise vaguely defined procedures at exceptionally low prices. Clinics are also not required to publish their complication rates.

In Germany, this may be a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, gynaecology or general surgery. Ideally, the surgeon should hold the German specialist title “Facharzt für Plastische und Ästhetische Chirurgie”. Membership of a recognised professional body, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Plastische, Rekonstruktive und Ästhetische Chirurgie (DGPRÄC) or the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ästhetisch-Plastische Chirurgie (DGÄPC), is also relevant.
Individual experience, professional reputation and the standards of the clinic where the operation will take place are equally important. Anyone considering breast surgery should be aware that the term “plastic surgeon” is not legally protected in Germany. You should therefore verify the surgeon’s qualifications and experience and ensure that the proposed surgical plan is explained clearly in advance.
