The Benefits of Combining Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift
Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are two of the best-known cosmetic procedures. They are often performed together to improve both the shape and size of the breasts. A degree of breast sagging is natural, but it may become more pronounced with age and can vary according to breast size, sometimes causing physical or emotional discomfort.
If you no longer feel comfortable with the appearance of your breasts and would like them to look firmer and more lifted, combining a breast lift with breast augmentation may be a suitable option for you.
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that changes the size and shape of the breasts using implants or the patient’s own fat. When implants are used, the incisions are commonly placed in the crease beneath the breast. This approach is associated with a low complication rate, and the resulting scar is usually well concealed. An incision in the armpit may be considered as an alternative. Implant-based breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately one hour. Breast augmentation with fat transfer involves two stages: 1. Fat is first removed from areas such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks or thighs, then processed under sterile conditions. 2. The prepared fat cells are injected into previously defined areas of the breast. Fat transfer can increase breast volume whilst also allowing precise contouring of the breast shape. As the fat must first be harvested and prepared, the procedure takes around two hours and is therefore somewhat longer than augmentation with implants.
What is a breast lift?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, can restore a firmer contour and improve the position of the breasts. It may be performed once breast development is complete. In a conventional breast lift, incisions are placed around the areola and generally fade over time. If a more substantial lift is required, the Lejour technique uses a vertical incision beneath the nipple. This may be combined with a T-shaped or L-shaped incision. Excess skin is removed, and the nipple is usually repositioned higher on the breast. A breast lift can be performed using the patient’s own tissue or combined with implants. When natural tissue is used for additional support, some of the tissue that would otherwise be removed can be shaped around the lower part of the breast like an internal belt and secured with sutures. If silicone implants are used, incisions may be placed around the areola, vertically downwards and horizontally within the breast crease. Excess tissue is removed, the nipple is repositioned and the implant is inserted.
Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift
Combined breast augmentation and lift surgery is commonly performed for patients between the ages of 30 and 60 who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts. The breasts may lose shape and firmness, particularly after pregnancy or significant weight loss. This procedure may be appropriate if you have
- sagging or flat breasts,
- asymmetrical breasts and/or
- moderate skin elasticity
and are also dissatisfied with your breast size. Suitability for combined breast augmentation and lift surgery is assessed individually during a consultation.

Benefits of breast augmentation combined with a breast lift
Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift can be an effective option for women who are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts and would like to improve both their shape and size.
Greater self-confidence
If sagging or disproportionate breasts affect how you feel about your body, combined breast augmentation and lift surgery may help improve your confidence. Breast augmentation alone may not adequately address sagging and, over time, the added volume can contribute to further descent. A breast lift alone, meanwhile, can make the breasts appear smaller. Combining the two procedures can create fuller, firmer and better-shaped breasts. This approach can achieve the desired volume whilst often providing a more balanced and long-lasting result than either procedure alone.
Improved symmetry
Every woman has different needs and expectations regarding breast surgery. Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift allows me to tailor the procedure to your individual anatomy and goals. I can adapt the size, shape and position of the implants whilst removing excess skin and tissue to lift the breasts. This approach can also improve the balance between asymmetrical breasts.

Reduced anaesthetic exposure
Combining both procedures means that only one general anaesthetic is required, avoiding the additional anaesthetic exposure associated with two separate operations. You also undergo a single recovery period rather than two, which can make the overall treatment and healing process more manageable.
What happens during surgery?
Breast augmentation with implants and a breast lift are usually performed during a single operation under general anaesthesia. The procedure takes approximately two to three hours. I first insert silicone implants to achieve the planned breast volume. Several factors influence the outcome of breast augmentation, including the choice of implant, the surgical technique and the position of the implant. Different incision patterns may be considered depending on the amount of excess skin, including T-, L-, I- or O-shaped techniques. I will discuss the most appropriate incision pattern with you during your consultation and use the technique that is expected to achieve the required lift with the least conspicuous scarring possible. I then perform the breast lift, removing excess skin and redraping the remaining skin around the newly shaped breast. Where appropriate, I use an internal bra technique to provide additional long-term support. The aim is a firmer, lifted breast with the desired volume.
Potential risks and side effects
As with any surgical procedure, combined breast augmentation and lift surgery involves potential risks and side effects. These may include bleeding, infection, altered nipple sensation, pain, swelling and bruising. Before you decide to proceed, I will discuss the relevant risks, possible complications and expected recovery with you in detail.
Aftercare
A dressing is applied around the breasts after surgery. You should return to the practice after 24 hours so that I can examine the wounds. The dressing is usually changed after three to four days. During recovery, you should rest and avoid heavy lifting. It is important to sleep on your back and care for the scars as instructed. I will prescribe pain relief, which may also help reduce inflammation and swelling. Light office work can usually be resumed around five to ten days after surgery. You should wear a special support bra for four to six weeks. Light exercise can generally be resumed after approximately three weeks, subject to your individual recovery.

Frequently asked questions
What should I bear in mind on the day of breast augmentation and lift surgery?
You should arrive at the clinic having followed the fasting instructions provided beforehand. If you are having day surgery, please arrange for someone to take you home afterwards. Once you arrive at the clinic, I will review the procedure with you and mark the planned incision lines on your breasts.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on its extent and complexity, surgery takes approximately three hours. If you wish, you may stay at the clinic overnight for observation.
When will I see the first results?
Your breasts will appear firmer and fuller immediately after surgery. However, it usually takes around six weeks for swelling to settle and the tissues to relax. The final result can generally be assessed after approximately six months. Results are intended to be long-lasting, although the breasts will continue to change naturally with age, weight fluctuations and other factors.
Will breast augmentation with a lift leave scars?
As incisions are required to remove excess skin, scars are unavoidable. I place the incisions in carefully selected areas so that the scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Incision length is kept to the minimum required for a safe and effective lift, and the scars usually fade into finer lines as healing progresses.
How long does pain last after breast augmentation with a lift?
Mild to moderate discomfort and a feeling of pressure are common during the first few days after surgery. I will prescribe suitable pain relief to keep this manageable. The discomfort should ease considerably after several days, although recovery and pain levels vary from person to person.
