What Does Breast Implant Replacement Involve?

When you visit my Berlin practice, I will begin with a detailed consultation. There will also be ample opportunity to ask questions. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia as a day-case procedure. If preferred, an overnight stay for observation can be arranged. I begin by making a fine incision, usually in the same location used to insert the original implants during your breast augmentation. This helps to avoid creating additional scars.

The incision is concealed within the crease beneath the breast. I then carefully remove the existing implants and, if desired, place new implants into the existing implant pockets. If implant replacement is combined with a breast lift, I also remove excess skin and reshape the breast. Finally, the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures, which do not need to be removed.

Preparing for Surgery

• arrive well rested, in good health and having fasted as instructed
• avoid nicotine and alcohol for two weeks before surgery
• stop taking blood-thinning medication where medically appropriate and only after consultation

During Surgery

• straightforward implant replacement: approximately 30 to 45 minutes
• treatment of implant damage or other medical concerns: approximately 60 to 90 minutes

Aftercare

• wear a supportive bra for four weeks
• use prescribed pain relief and cooling packs if required
• follow the recommended scar-care routine
• resume most social activities after approximately two to five days
• return to work after approximately five to 14 days, depending on your occupation
• avoid exercise for six weeks

On the day of discharge, our team will arrange a follow-up appointment so that I can monitor your recovery and the development of your breasts. Although you may see an initial change within 48 hours, the final result becomes apparent only after the swelling has subsided and the tissues have settled.

Possible Risks

As with any operation, breast implant replacement carries certain risks. Common and generally temporary effects include:
