Lip Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is a well-established, minimally invasive method of adding volume to the upper or lower lip and enhancing its contours. A hyaluronic acid injection can increase or restore volume in the vermilion of the lips whilst improving definition and shape.

Treatment can also improve mild asymmetry, refine uneven contours and restore definition to a lip border that has become less distinct. The aim is a carefully controlled result that complements your natural features.

Hyaluronic acid may also soften fine vertical lines above the upper lip.

The Procedure

I follow high medical standards to keep treatment as safe and comfortable as possible and use only high-quality hyaluronic acid products from certified manufacturers. Lip augmentation is generally performed with local anaesthesia. Many hyaluronic acid fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that helps reduce discomfort as the treatment progresses.

How Long Does Hyaluronic Acid Last in the Lips?

Results generally last for around eight to ten months, although this varies from person to person and depends on factors such as the product used and individual metabolism. Appropriately timed maintenance treatments can help preserve the effect.

Lip Augmentation with Fat Transfer

With this method, a small amount of your own fat is removed from another area of the body, prepared and injected into the lips to add volume. As only a limited quantity is required, the fat can usually be harvested immediately before the lip procedure.

Because the material comes from your own body, it is generally well tolerated. Unlike hyaluronic acid, some of the transferred fat that successfully establishes a blood supply may provide a long-lasting result, although a proportion is naturally reabsorbed and the outcome can vary.

Lip Treatment with Botulinum Toxin

Botox, or botulinum toxin, can be used selectively to reduce muscle activity around the mouth and soften certain expression lines without adding volume. Precise placement and conservative dosing are essential in this sensitive area, so treatment requires considerable experience and skill.

Is Lip Augmentation Painful?

This is a question patients frequently ask. Lip injections can cause brief discomfort, as the lips are a sensitive area, but treatment is usually well tolerated. If required, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand to make the procedure more comfortable.

Aftercare

Aftercare is generally straightforward. On the day of treatment, avoid touching the lips unnecessarily and refrain from drinking very hot beverages, as the area may remain sensitive. You should also avoid saunas and sunbeds for at least two days. If gentle massage is appropriate for the product and technique used, I will show you exactly how and when to perform it; otherwise, do not massage the treated area unless advised.

Risks and Side Effects

Lip augmentation at my Berlin practice is generally a low-risk procedure when performed by an appropriately qualified doctor, but no injection treatment is entirely without risk. Temporary redness, tenderness, bruising and swelling may occur and usually settle within a few days. Reactions to hyaluronic acid or transferred fat are uncommon but possible. Pronounced swelling, persistent pain, changes in skin colour or other unexpected symptoms require prompt medical assessment. Careful technique and the use of appropriate, certified products help minimise complications, although they cannot be excluded entirely.
