I usually perform a direct brow lift or Brazilian brow lift under local anaesthesia, as neither procedure is generally very demanding for the patient. An indirect brow lift, by contrast, is usually carried out under general anaesthesia. Whether treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure or involves an overnight stay depends on its extent and can also take your personal preferences into account. Where an inpatient stay is appropriate, it generally lasts one day. Before surgery, I carefully mark the planned incisions on the treatment area. You will then receive either local or general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia may be combined with a mild sedative so that the operation takes place under twilight sedation. Surgery lasts approximately 1.5 to two hours. The incisions are then closed with sutures and a dressing is applied. Sutures are removed after 14 days.
A brow lift is generally considered a low-risk procedure. As with any operation, however, complications can occur, including post-operative bleeding, delayed wound healing or allergic reactions. Infection, injury to nerves in the surgical area or an unsatisfactory result are uncommon when brow lift surgery is performed by an appropriately qualified specialist. Please stop taking painkillers, sleeping tablets and blood-thinning medication one week before surgery, but only after discussing this with the prescribing doctor. You should avoid nicotine and alcohol, or reduce them to a minimum, during this period and for several weeks after the procedure. Some discomfort is to be expected during the first two days, but it can usually be managed with mild pain relief. Swelling and bruising gradually subside during the healing period.
You will generally need to wear a dressing only during the first day after your brow lift. It is removed at a follow-up examination the next day. If you have stayed overnight and healing is progressing normally, you can then leave the clinic. Following an outpatient procedure, you will attend a follow-up appointment at my practice. Further examinations are arranged over the following weeks. Physical rest is important during the first few days after a brow lift, and regular cooling can help reduce swelling and bruising. Most patients return to work and social activities after one to two weeks. Once the dressing has been removed, the treated area may come into contact with water again. Please avoid make-up around the brows and forehead until the sutures have been removed. Strenuous physical activity, exercise and sauna visits can usually be resumed after three weeks. Until healing is complete, protect your eyes and forehead from strong sunlight and artificial UV exposure, including sunbeds. Regular scar care is also important, and I will advise you on this during your follow-up appointments.
Brow Lift – A Fresher, More Youthful Appearance
As part of the natural ageing process, the eyebrows gradually descend. This is largely due to a loss of skin elasticity. As the skin provides less support, the forehead muscles have to work harder to maintain the brows’ position, which can make lines in the forehead area more pronounced. Descending brows also frequently contribute to hooded eyelids, and an upper eyelid lift alone may not always be sufficient to address them.
A brow lift in Berlin can provide long-lasting elevation of lowered eyebrows and reduce hooding of the upper eyelids. It may also ease the muscular strain that contributes to forehead lines. Where appropriate, brow lift surgery can be combined with a forehead lift or facial lipofilling for wrinkle treatment. I offer these procedures alongside brow lift surgery at my Berlin practice.
What Results Can Be Achieved with a Brow Lift?
Lifting the eyebrows can give the entire face a fresher, more youthful appearance. Hooded eyelids caused by lowered brows can be reduced, creating a more open appearance around the eyes. A brow lift may also improve asymmetry between the eyebrows.
The initial results become visible within a few days of surgery. The final result can usually be assessed after approximately three months, once the remaining swelling has subsided. Results commonly last for seven to ten years, although this varies according to individual anatomy, lifestyle and the natural ageing process.
Where Are the Incisions Made for a Brow Lift?
Different incision techniques can be used for brow lift surgery in Berlin. I select the most appropriate approach according to each patient’s anatomy, degree of brow descent and desired outcome.
For a direct brow lift, I make an incision along the upper border of the eyebrow and remove a narrow strip of skin. This allows the brow to be repositioned. The scar follows the upper brow line and may remain visible to some degree in patients with very fine or sparse eyebrows. This type of brow lift is performed under local anaesthesia.
An indirect brow lift is also known as a temporal or temple lift. I place the incision at the side of the head, above the hairline. By removing a strip of skin and securing the deeper tissues in a higher position, I lift the eyebrows from above. The hair usually conceals the resulting scar. At my specialist practice for plastic and aesthetic surgery in Berlin, I generally perform this procedure under general anaesthesia.
A Brazilian brow lift also uses an incision within the hair-bearing area at the side of the head. I separate the skin from the underlying muscle layer, draw it upwards and secure it to the deeper muscular fascia with sutures, thereby repositioning the brows. The scar is concealed within the hair and the procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia.
A degree of brow elevation may also be achieved without surgery using Botox or dermal filler injections. The results of these non-surgical treatments are temporary, however, and treatment must be repeated at regular intervals.
