Eyelid Lift in Berlin
The eyes are among the most delicate organs in the human body and essential to everyday life. The skin around them is particularly thin and sensitive, making it more vulnerable to damage. Environmental factors and the ageing process therefore tend to become apparent around the eyes at an early stage.
The eyes are often described as the window to the soul, and many people would like this area to look fresh, alert and youthful. Lines around the eyes, hooded eyelids and under-eye bags can detract from this appearance. Drooping upper eyelids may create a tired or aged expression and, in some cases, make the eyes appear less open.
As maintaining a youthful appearance is a common concern, eyelid surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

- Cool the eye area immediately after surgery to reduce swelling. Sleep with your upper body elevated and avoid physical activity, direct sunlight and brightly lit rooms. Do not wear contact lenses for at least two weeks. Once the sutures have been removed, apply the recommended wound and scar gel to the treated areas. Avoid make-up and creams around the eyes for at least one week.
Before surgery, I mark the planned incisions on the eyelid skin and carefully measure the amount of tissue to be removed. Once you have given your informed consent, the procedure begins under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or general anaesthesia. An incision is made along the natural eyelid crease, through which excess skin and, where necessary, underlying muscle or fatty tissue are removed. Positioning the incision within the eyelid crease helps to keep the resulting scar discreet. The entire operation is performed under magnification using very fine sutures. A distinction is generally made between upper and lower eyelid surgery. The procedure usually takes between one and two hours, and the sutures are generally removed after one week.
An eyelid lift is generally considered a low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced specialist. Nevertheless, it is an operation and, like any surgery, carries potential risks and side effects. These may include swelling, bruising, a sensation of tightness and irritation of the conjunctiva or cornea. In rare cases, scars may become firm or inflammation may develop along the suture line. Unsatisfactory aesthetic results are also possible, although careful planning, a thorough consultation and treatment by an experienced specialist can substantially reduce this risk. To minimise potential complications, I recommend avoiding blood-thinning medication such as aspirin before surgery, unless medically prescribed. Where possible, refrain from nicotine and alcohol for two weeks before the operation. Eat a light meal and drink clear fluids on the evening before surgery, then follow the fasting instructions provided, which usually require you not to eat for six hours beforehand. Mild bleeding and discomfort when opening or closing the eyes may occur immediately after the procedure and do not necessarily indicate impaired wound healing. If pain persists or bleeding does not subside, please contact me promptly for an assessment or follow-up appointment at my Berlin practice.
Swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal immediately after surgery and usually subside over the following days. To ease discomfort and reduce swelling, I recommend cooling the area regularly with cold packs, cooling ointments or a purpose-designed cooling mask. Always handle the treated areas gently. Many patients experience little or no pain immediately after the procedure. If required, I will prescribe suitable pain relief for you to take as directed. You should avoid alcohol and cigarettes during the first few days after surgery. Keep the eye area away from heat and touch the operated areas as little as possible. Do not apply cosmetics around the eyes for at least one week, and wear glasses instead of contact lenses for two weeks. Your eyes may remain more sensitive for several weeks. Avoid direct sunlight where possible, wear sunglasses outdoors and limit prolonged screen use. The overall healing process may take up to six weeks, with the final result generally becoming apparent around two months after surgery.
Facts and Information About Eyelid Surgery
An eyelid lift is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and, where appropriate, underlying muscle and fatty tissue are removed. The aim is to rejuvenate the eye area by tightening the upper or lower eyelids. In some cases, upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed together.
What Is an Eyelid Lift?
An eyelid lift is primarily performed to reduce unwanted under-eye bags or hooded eyelids by removing excess skin and, where necessary, underlying muscle and fatty tissue. This creates a smoother, firmer eye area and can make the eyes look fresher and more youthful.
When Is an Eyelid Lift Appropriate?
An eyelid lift is primarily an aesthetic procedure for people who feel that hooded eyelids or under-eye bags make them look older or more tired than they feel. In some cases, however, surgery may also be medically indicated.
This may apply when drooping eyelids significantly restrict the field of vision. Eyelid laxity can develop naturally as part of the ageing process, but may also be influenced by alcohol and tobacco use, an unbalanced diet, stress, lack of sleep and excessive sun exposure. Hooded eyelids and under-eye bags may also be hereditary.
What Results Can an Eyelid Lift Achieve?
During an eyelid lift, excess skin, fat and muscle tissue are removed from the eyelid as required. The remaining skin is redraped and tightened, which can also reduce the appearance of lines around the eyes. Depending on your individual anatomy and concerns, surgery may focus on the upper eyelids or be combined with a lower eyelid lift.
Because the incision follows the natural eyelid crease, the resulting scars are generally discreet and become less noticeable as they mature. The eye area has a considerable influence on the overall appearance of the face. Smoother, firmer eyelids can create a fresher, more alert and youthful expression. The extent of surgery depends on the severity of your hooded eyelids and under-eye bags. The final result is usually visible after around two months and may last for up to ten years, although the natural ageing process will continue.

Benefits of an Eyelid Lift
An eyelid lift can create a clearer, more open appearance and help the eyes look fresher and more youthful. By reducing hooded eyelids, the procedure can soften a tired or heavy expression.

Which Eyelid Lift Techniques Are Available?
If surgery feels too extensive for your hooded eyelids or under-eye bags, simple measures such as ice cubes, cooling pads or cucumber slices may temporarily reduce swelling.
However, these approaches offer only short-term relief and cannot produce a lasting structural change. For pronounced excess skin or persistent concerns, surgery may therefore be the most appropriate option. Laser eyelid treatment is also used in plastic and aesthetic surgery as an alternative for carefully selected patients.
Laser eyelid treatment
This procedure generally uses a CO₂ laser and takes approximately 15–30 minutes. It is an ablative treatment in which a focused beam removes the outermost layers of skin, stimulating renewal and creating a firmer skin surface.
However, this method is suitable only for very mild eyelid laxity.
The Eyelid Lift Procedure
An eyelid lift requires careful preparation, appropriate aftercare and a thorough consultation so that you can make a well-informed decision. Blepharoplasty can only be performed when there is sufficient tissue to treat safely. The procedure generally involves the following steps:
- Tightening the upper eyelid area
- Removal of excess skin and, where necessary, underlying fatty and muscle tissue
Preparation and thorough examination
Before surgery, I carefully assess the anatomy and function of your eyelids. The severity and characteristics of your hooded eyelids determine which surgical technique is most appropriate and where the incisions should be placed.
On the day of surgery
Immediately before the operation, I mark the planned incisions on the eyelid skin. The procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia or twilight sedation; general anaesthesia may be considered for particularly anxious patients. Surgery is carried out carefully using a scalpel, after which the incisions are closed with fine sutures. An eyelid lift usually takes around one hour. Most patients are able to return to work and social activities after one to two weeks. The sutures are generally removed after one week.
Immediately after surgery
After the operation, you will remain at my practice for observation and assessment for approximately one to two hours. You should rest and avoid physical activity during the first three days.
The following days and weeks
Regular cooling can help ease discomfort during the initial recovery period. Avoid direct sunlight, cosmetics and exercise as advised. Severe or persistent pain is unusual; should it occur, please contact my practice promptly for an examination.
